The History of Halloween
Halloween, the festival of silly and scary costumes, endless amounts of candy and trick or treating can be traced back 2000 years to the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain (which translated from Gaelic, means ‘summer’s end’. Originally a yearly gathering at the end of the year in which resources would be gathered for the coming winter months, many started to wear scary costumes and light bonfires to scare of threatening ghosts. After creating the holiday of ‘All Saints Day’ on November 1st to honour all saints and martyrs which beared similar traditions of the festival of Samhain, the day before this then began to be known as Hallows’ Eve which later developed into what we know as Halloween on October 31st. Despite its ghoulish beginnings, Halloween has developed into the child-friendly, fun based tradition it is today.
